Bayer Submits Recombinant Human Thrombin for European Approval

The biotechnologically produced recombinant thrombin alfa provides surgeons with a plasma-free thrombin alternative for surgical hemostasis. As it is not derived from animal or human blood, it does not imply the risk of infections which is generally associated with plasma products. In Europe, there are in excess of 4 million surgical procedures performed annually where a hemostatic product may be used and surgeons currently have to rely on either sponges or tissue sealants. Thrombin alfa would be the first stand-alone thrombin product to control bleeding during surgery and may improve the therapeutic options in Europe.

Get health insurance 'early'

Those seeking health insurance ought to consider taking it out as early as possible, according to one expert.Vanessa Bourne, a spokesperson for the Patients Association, said although having a healthy lifestyle may reduce premiums, people cannot "avoid" their genetics."Our advice would be that if you want private coverage, get it early in life when it should be cheaper and try and keep it if you change jobs," Ms Bourne advised. Each time someone takes out a new insurance policy, the "meter stars again", she stated, adding that health changes and age can limit the availability of cover and increase the costs of premiums.Private medical insurance provider Bupa recently said having a healthier lifestyle can help people to save money. The company said cutting out cigarettes , choosing to drink water instead of coffee, favouring the "great outdoors" over the gym and cycling to work can all have financial benefits.

Uninsured Kansans on the rise

Kansas offers Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program, which is called Healthwave.

But King said Kansas lacks an active outreach program to get folks enrolled who are eligible for those programs.

“That is part of the missing link," she said.

In the United States, many people get health insurance through their employer. Approximately 57 percent of Kansans receive coverage this way.

But the number of employers offering coverage is decreasing, and the number of workers who enroll in employer-based health coverage also is decreasing because of increased copayments and deductibles.

In Kansas there are more obstacles, according to Marcia Nielsen, executive director of the Kansas Health Policy Authority, which has been fighting for health care reform.
